Another week another shoe release, but this is very very special. The Nike Air Max arrived in 1987, inspired by the Pompidou Centre in Paris that has the same ‘outside in’ design as the famous French building. Tinker Hatfield and Mark Parker wanted the most comfortable running shoe on the market, and while they had already given us the waffle sole they wanted more for their top class athletes.

Having a magic Air Bag in the sole, the first time I saw a pair I was 13 or 14 when JD Sports had a really small store in Birmingham. I pestered my dad to buy me some and he eventually gave in. With my new Nike’s constantly been worn I was even sent home from school as they didn’t meet the strict uniform code. It was the start of a love affair that has gone on and on.

Their construction is premium, with a tough mesh upper decked out in an OG colourway. They have their iconic Air Bag and the latest Lunarlon sole unit which has an all new sculptured finish that sets it apart from other Lunar shoes. Nike introduced a tape finish last year and this is the best incarnation yet, I was never a fan at the start but this really works. The contrast of red grey and white with the textures is so so good. They’re light too, Air Max’s have lost weight over the years but these are another level and super tough.
