Nike Kukini Free

photo2

Nike’s Kukini first debuted back in 1999 as a running specific silhouette. Its design was like nothing seen before but also very typical Nike. Featuring a rubber framework and lace-free ‘Avant-grade esq’ upper, the original version benefited from visible Air in the sole unit. Fast forward some 13 years later and Nike have added their ever-popular Free 5.0 sole for modern comfort and shock absorption, which has also helped shed a load of weight resulting in one of the lightest models on the market!

The Nike Kukini Free is available from selected size? stores and online now.

Nike reveal the story behind the iconic Free sole unit with this neat short video from their Tales From The Kitchen series. Focusing on the sole’s designer Tobie Hatfield (yes, that’s Tinker’s brother), the video follows the story of Tobie’s inspiration, beginning with a fondness for barefoot running and culminating in the creation of the segmented sole.

Intended for more of a leisure/post-training shoe as opposed to a sports specific silhouette when first released in 1982, the Tokyo is the last of our 4-featured models from our Diadora Collection. Whilst it may not be one of Diadora’s most recognisable releases, its construction, simple styling and streamlined wedge shape combine to give the shoe a classic look and feel.

Featuring brushed suede in the uppers with contrasting leather branding, the shoe’s standout feature is its popular gum sole unit. A prime example of Diadora’s Italian design aesthetics, the size? exclusive Tokyo will be available from stores and online in April (exact date TBC).

Nike ‘Elite 51’ NFL uniforms

nike_nfl_uniformunveil_players01_03apr2012_large

Earlier this week Nike unveiled their new look ‘uniforms’ for the new 2012 NFL season. Billed (by Nike) as “the next generation” in sports kit, the super lightweight design was created to deliver the best in performance for athletes at the highest level.

Given the name tag ‘Elite 51’, referencing Nike’s Co-founder Bill Bowerman - who wore the number 51 shirt - the new seasons uniforms incorporate ‘Flywire’ technology in the neckline to reduce weight and provide lockdown fit over pads, increasing sleeve articulation for better range of motion, and integrating new four-way stretch fabrication to provide a streamlined shrink-wrap fit.

While American Football may not be as popular on this side of the pond, it’s still nice to see what’s going on Stateside and a launch on this scale by a brand at the top of their game.

Filthy Luker: ‘Space Invaders’

spaceinvadermcr1

Not one of our typical posts but still one we thought worth sharing with you….

Street artist Filthy Luker’s large-scale ‘art attacks’ have earned him international notoriety. Famed for bizarre installations like  a curious pair of ogling eyes that occupied the space next to the walkway between the John Peel Stage and the Dance Village at Glastonbury, to ‘octopied’ buildings as far and wide as Taiwan.

For his latest creation, in collaboration with Red Stripe – a creative initiative from the Jamaican beer brand – Filthy Luker has transformed hoardings around Manchester’s Town Hall into a huge urban-art version the retro arcade classic, Space Invaders.

“I’ve been obsessed with making art from street furniture for quite some time and had noticed the similarities between these road barriers and the classic invaders” says the art-attacker. Complete with LED lights transforming the installation into a fully operable game, Filthy Luker’s creation is active now until May.

Diadora Heroes – ‘Return of a Legend’

91

Originally released as the Seb Impact, the Heroes was a running specific silhouette first launched in 1985. The key feature of the shoe, and one that Diadora kept very close to their chest whilst developing, was a customisable stability system in the sole unit, which allowed the wearer to insert different weights in different positions to help balance weight and cushion the impact of the shoe on the track.

Said to also help an athletes posture, the weight stability system was seen as way ahead of its time and as a result the popularity of the shoe was such that it successfully positioned the Italian brand as a competitive force in the fast developing running footwear market.

Back for summer 2012, with a new name and as part of Diadora’s collection, the Heroes will be available exclusively from size? stores and online in April (exact date TBC).
