New Balance 1500 OG 'Made In England' 30th Anniversary

Making its debut in 1989, the New Balance 1500 ‘Made In England’ returns this season to celebrate 30 years since its initial inception. We’ll dissect the silhouette shortly, but first, a brief look at the process behind the brand’s Made In England collections.

Located on the picturesque western Cumbria coastline, Flimby has been the breeding ground for the brand’s famed ‘Made In England’ range since 1982. The line is renowned for its focus on using quality sourced materials, hand-crafted by 200+ skilled and dedicated workers who together manufacture some 6500–7000 shoes a week all by hand - no mean feat.

The 1500 was produced as part of New Balance’s flagship running shoe series during the 1980s running boom, following on from the already popular 1300 and 1400 silhouettes. Taking a total of 3 years to design, New Balance described the model as the ‘closest thing yet to the perfect running shoe’. The pair made headlines at the time, being the first running shoe in the UK to break the £100 price barrier, and was a fan favourite thanks to its butter-soft suede uppers and supple 'N' Logo branding, sitting smaller than any used on previous silhouettes.

So to continue the legacy of one of the brand’s most enduring and iconic classic runners, the 1500 is delivered in its timeless Navy blue and Anthracite grey colour combination. Crafted from panels of smooth nubuck, mesh panels are utilised below to provide you with breathable comfort with every wear. Below, the brand's revered ENCAP® midsole technology delivers premium cushioning and powerful support, while a rubber outsole ensures multi-surface traction on testing terrain.

Sitting alongside the 1500, similarly, the all-new 1530 receives the same premium ‘Made In England’ treatment. Cut from the same smooth nubuck and breathable mesh in a clean white, blue, and grey colourway, the 1530 differs slightly with an updated sole unit. Making the shoe 30% than the 1500, the 1530 is delivered with the brand’s RevLite Sole, granting you equal amounts of cushioning comfort. There are a few notable deviations to the side-panels too, with a two-part mudguard sitting higher up the foot than previously.

The New Balance 1500 and 1530 OG 'Made In England' 30th Anniversary Pack will be available via the size? website and in size? stores on Saturday 2nd March, priced at £150.

We were lucky enough to visit the iconic Filmby Factory back in 2015 and you can check out the meticulous hand-crafted construction process below..
